SMETA stands for Sedex Members and Ethical Trade Audit and is a widely applied and accepted audit methodology and report format designed to meet multiple customer requirements. SMETA has been adopted by most multinationals who require their suppliers to demonstrate compliance to Corporate Social Responsiblity (CSR) and responsible sourcing. SMETA is based on the principles of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) Conventions and the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) based code. Companies who meet the Sedex Standard's requirements are protecting their reputation and are further ensuring that their suppliers are also compliant. This is essential where many raw materials, and services are sourced offshore. Many large companies have discovered atrocities in their supply chains and arguably without an audit, they may never become aware of these prior to an expose in the media. SMETA audits can be conducted as a 2-pillar or 4-pillar audit.

A 2-pillar complaince audit is comprised of the following modules:

  • Labour Standards
  • Health and Safety
  • Management Systems
  • Entitlement to work
  • Subcontracting and Homeworking
  • Environmental assessment (shortened)

A 4-pillar audit covers the above fundamentals as well as the additional modules below:

  • Environmental Assessment (extended)
  • Business Ethics
